Keeping Your Ear, Nose, and Throat Healthy: Easy Tips
EAR
- Guard Your Ears: Shield your ears from loud noises like blaring music, traffic, or prolonged earphone use.
- Ear Cleaning Cautions: Avoid using earbuds, pencils, or matchsticks to clean your ears; these can lead to infections or injury. Your ear canal naturally expels wax outward.
- Say No to Hot Oil: Never pour hot oil into your ears to clear wax. It’s dangerous and can cause permanent hearing loss.
- Swimming Safety: For swimming, use soft silicone earplugs to prevent water from entering your ears.
- Flying with Infections: If you have a respiratory tract infection, consider postponing air travel to prevent ear pain or eardrum trauma.
NOSE
- Nose Etiquette: Avoid picking or forcefully blowing your nose, which can cause nosebleeds and trauma.
- Protect Against Irritants: When in dusty or polluted environments, wear a mask to shield your nose.
- Moisturize Dry Nasal Cavities: In dry climates, maintain nasal moisture by using saline nasal sprays or steam inhalation.
- Nasal Drops Caution: Don’t use Oxymetazoline (Otrivin/Nasivion) nasal drops without medical advice; they can lead to dependence and should only be used short-term.
MOUTH & THROAT
- Oral Care: Brush your teeth twice daily for good oral hygiene.
- Stay Hydrated: Consume 2-3 liters of water daily to keep your throat moist and healthy.
- Voice Protection: Avoid shouting or screaming to prevent damage to your vocal cords.
- Post-Meal Rest: Wait 2-3 hours after meals before lying down to prevent acid reflux.
- Chew Mindfully: Eat small meals and chew your food thoroughly for easier digestion.
- Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol: Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption for overall health.
By following these friendly tips, you can maintain the health of your ear, nose, and throat with ease.
